Does Kroger Take Apple Pay: 2023 Guide

As one of the leading grocery store chains in the United States, Kroger welcomes nearly 11 million customers every day. The retailer does a lot to make shopping convenient for them, including introducing its handy Kroger Pay app. But does Kroger accept other mobile payments like Apple Pay?

Kroger does not take Apple Pay in 2022, even though it used to accept it and other NFC payments back in 2020. If you’d like to pay with your phone at Kroger, you’ll need to use the Kroger Pay app. Other payment methods include cash, credit and debit cards, personal checks, Kroger gift cards, WIC cards, and EBT cards.

This article will talk about Kroger’s history of accepting Apple Pay and potential reasons it chose to stop. We’ll also discuss the Kroger Pay app and how to use it, and we’ll cover all of the in-store payment methods.

Does Kroger Accept Apple Pay?

Kroger does not accept Apple Pay and does not have plans to accept it in the future.

However, the retailer did briefly accept Apple Pay in the past. In August of 2020, the grocery store chain piloted Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, and other mobile payments.

It’s not clear when Kroger stopped accepting Apple Pay and other mobile payment options, but now the only way to pay with your phone is to use the Kroger Pay app.

Can You Pay With Your Phone At Kroger?

You can pay with your phone at Kroger using the Kroger Pay app.

The app is a safe, quick, and contact-free way for customers to pay and save on their groceries. It works by generating a one-time QR (Quick Response) Code, which securely transmits your loyalty and payment information. Just scan your Kroger Pay QR Code during checkout to pay.

Within the app, payment methods include debit cards, credit cards, and prepaid cards. You can not use Kroger gift cards for Kroger Pay.

Kroger Pay is accepted at participating in-store locations in both attendant and self-checkout lanes. You can also use it to pay at in-store Pharmacy checkouts. However, you cannot pay using the app when going through the Pharmacy drive-thru.

Other places you can’t pay with the Kroger Pay app include the Kroger website, independent merchants inside Kroger stores, and Kroger Fuel Centers.

Does Kroger Take Other Contactless Payment?

No. Although Kroger once accepted other forms of contactless payment such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, this is no longer the case.

Does Kroger Take Tap To Pay?

Kroger does not take tap to pay. Instead, you can use the Kroger Pay app to pay for your Kroger purchases from your phone.

Does Kroger Take NFC?

It’s not known exactly when Kroger stopped taking NFC payments. Some reports state that Kroger chose not to accept them anymore due to a lack of interest among its customers.

Another potential reason Kroger moved away from NFC payments is because of its in-house app, Kroger Pay. This app allows customers to pay from their phones.

By eliminating other NFC payment methods, Kroger could drive more customers toward its app.

Considering that most merchants are charged fees when their customers use NFC payments, it makes sense for the grocery chain to stick with its own app to increase its profit margins.

Can You Google Pay At Kroger?

You cannot Google Pay at Kroger. Google Pay was briefly accepted at Kroger in 2020, but is no longer one of the chain’s approved payment methods. If you’d like to pay from your phone at Kroger, you’ll need to download the Kroger Pay app.

Can You Pay With PayPal At Kroger?

Although many online sources state that Kroger accepts PayPal, this is not true. Kroger used to accept PayPal during the period in 2020 when it piloted various mobile payments.

However, the only form of mobile payments that Kroger now accepts is its in-house app, Kroger Pay.

How Do I Pay At Kroger?

There are numerous ways to pay at Kroger.

Of course, you can pay with cash, as well as your debit or credit card. You can also pay with a Kroger gift card or personal check.
