It all depends on your needs.
Average Cost of Different Types of Lawn Mowers:
The cost of a lawn mower is entirely dependent on the type of mower you’re going for. We identify three types of mowers, electric push mowers, gas self-propelled mowers and rear engine mowers. These three types range from cheapest to most expensive as well as easiest lawns to most difficult.
Lawn Mower Type | Average Price | See on Amazon |
Electric Push | $151 | |
Gas Self Propelled | $421 | |
Rear Engine | $2,000 |
Electric Push Mowers: $150
For those with smaller lawns that don’t generally get very unruly (as in the grass doesn’t grow that tall) a smaller lawn mower without the bells and whistles may be enough for you. Electric lawn mowers don’t have the same power as their gas counterparts, but if you have an easy lawn, that won’t be an issue. You really only need the power of a gas motor when the grass you’re cutting is thick or unruly or if you have a large lawn with slopes and declines. Electric lawn mowers generally cost between $90 and $200.
Cost of Gas Powered, Self Propelled Mowers: $421
For larger and tougher lawns, gas powered mowers will be a better investment for you. Gas powered mowers can come in push form or “self-propelled form”. As the name implies, self-propelled mowers will push forward themselves when they are turned on. This will come in handy when dealing with tough or sloping lawns. The average price for a self-propelled lawn mower is about $421, about twice as much as an electric, push mower.
Rear Engine Lawn Mowers: $1,300 to $3,000
For the largest and toughest of lawns, or for those who still want to cut their grass but a physical disability prevents them from doing so, there are rear engine motors. Resembling mini-tractors, these behemoth grass cutting machines usually cost at least $1,110 and can be as expensive as $3,000.
Average Cost of Lawn Mowers by Brand:
It’s not secret that certain brands tend to be more expensive than others. Some of the most common brands we’ve identified are Ryobi, Swisher, Sun Joe, Toro, Troy-Bilt and Honda.
Ryobi non-rear engine mowers range in price from $150 to $500. Ryobi is interesting in that all of its models are electric powered. They all run on a chargeable lithium ion battery. Both walk-behind push Ryobies and self-propelled are electrically powered. Most Toro’s cost between $300 and $500 and offer numerous high quality gas options. Toro also has models in the $1,000s which are gas, but have an electric start.
Troy-Built is a bit more of a budget option, with their models coming between $200 and $400. You can find both self-propelled and walk behind lawn mowers with Troy-Built. Hondas on the other hand are generally pretty expensive, ranging from $500 to $1,000. Hondas have a bit more bells and whistles than some of the other brands we’ve mentioned. Most are also electric start which are easier to turn on than gas start models.
